Winter Student Highlights
- UIS students Joseph Partain and Cedric Birgans at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa in late January.
Partain received an individual outstanding attorney award and Birgans won an individual outstanding witness award.
- One of the top players in UIS baseball history, John Sechen, organization on Jan. 30. Sechen played from 2016-19 and was a three-time all-GLVC selection. He is the school’s career leader in many offensive categories. He is the third Prairie Stars player to sign with a Major League Baseball affiliate over the last two years.
- UIS students got a chance to watch the Illinois Supreme Court’s morning oral arguments and meet with Chief Justice Anne Burke. The meet-and-greet was sponsored by the Phi Alpha Delta pre-law fraternity and the Pre-Law Center.
- Brandon Derman (ENS) and student Lucy Perlman conducted qualitative field research during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change negotiations in Madrid, Spain. They examined the framing of “climate justice” inside negotiations and at a concurrent summit held by civil society groups.
- Over the past year, 340 UIS undergraduate students completed internships for academic credit through the Internship & Prior Learning Office. Based on internship
supervisor evaluations, 99% of those interns received an overall performance rating as excellent (83%) or good (16%), with students scoring an average of 4.8 out of 5.0 scale.

UIS enhances students’ educational experience and encourages their success and professional development by providing support for student research. Undergraduate and graduate students may choose to present a short oral presentation, a poster presentation, art exhibition, or performance of their work at the annual Student Technology, Arts, & Research Symposium (STARS). UIS also provides students with research opportunities through the Undergraduate Research Support Program.
